Today was my third day at my job here at the secondary school. This week is mainly a week of exams, so I will begin with being in the majority of my classes next week. Today and yesterday, I introduced myself to two small group classes that are sort of extra (not my regular classes). They were 12 and 13 years old and they seem so fun. I spent time talking about myself, showing pictures of my family and friends, talking about living in the U.S. They were loving asking me questions and showing me what they know in English. It was a great time. I'm excited to get started with the other classes next week!
The staff members at the school have been super welcoming. I was introduced to many of the high up positions in the school as La Nativa in the English department. I am the only Native Language teacher that was sent to this school by the government. The people who receive the grant I got are sent all over Spain to public schools with bilingual programs. I am surprised I am the only one at this school. My friend Jeannette, from California, who is at a different school here in Puertollano, is the only other teacher like me. There are only two of us in all of Puertollano---very cool.
Along with getting acquainted with the school and staff these past few days, I also received my schedule, and it looks like I will mainly be working with students who are at a high-beginner to intermediate level. I will work with 6 different sections of students, once a week. During my other periods throughout the day, I will be meeting one-on-one with various teachers who come to me with questions with their English. These teachers are not certified English teachers, but they know English well-enough to be teaching various courses in English. To my understanding, I will be helping them with proofreading their tests/quizzes, pronunciation, and technical vocabulary for their specific content areas.
I have been told that my role here is to help everyone (students and teachers) practice speaking. Speaking, speaking, speaking! :)
Alright, enough for today. Chao!!
